If we make it past the first page of a book, it’s basically a miracle.
If you’re looking for books for a 13-month-old who barely lets you finish page one, these are the five we keep coming back to.
My daughter has opinions. Sometimes we’re reading. Sometimes we’re speed-flipping through every page. Sometimes the book is being forcibly removed from my hands. I’m just here to see which activity she’s chosen.
But these five books? She actually lets me read them. And by “lets me,” I mean demands that I start over immediately after finishing.
1. Peek-a-Who? — A Favorite for Peekaboo
I mean, who doesn’t love peekaboo? And it rhymes!!
This book is the perfect size for little hands, and my daughter loves acting surprised by every reveal. We’ve read it ten times before I’ve even finished my morning coffee, but apparently, the ending is still shocking.
I respect her commitment to the performance.
For the plot twist that apparently never gets old → Peek - A - Who? (Amazon)
2. Where Is Your Nose? — For Learning Body Parts
She can now identify all her body parts, so obviously my first thought is: Is my baby a genius??
Finding everyone’s nose has become her new party trick. Her nose. My nose. Your nose. If you have a nose, she would like to show you exactly where it is.
This book makes pointing out body parts into a little game, and she is very committed to participating.
Give your baby a new party trick → Nose Goes! (Amazon)
3. Scruffy’s Book of Colors — Short and Simple
Do we know our colors yet? No.
Do we appreciate a monochromatic moment? Absolutely.
The colorful pages keep her interested, and there’s just enough to read before she’s ready to move on. Simple, short, no notes.
Here for the monochromatic moment → Limited copy! (Amazon)
4. Llama Llama I Love You — A Rhyming Favorite
Does anyone else enter a flow state when reading a Llama Llama book? Why do they rhyme so well??
This one is a favorite, but personally, I think they all slap. The rhythm makes it fun to read out loud, and the sweet little message is a bonus.
A book she wants to hear and I actually want to read? We love when our interests align.
For a read-aloud that honestly slaps → Llama Llama (Amazon)
5. Play With Me — The One She Requests on Repeat
Want to know a secret? This book actually drives me crazy.
But the smile my daughter gets when we read it makes me willing to read it 105 times. Apparently, that’s who I am now.
Is it my favorite? Absolutely not. Is it hers? The repeat requests suggest yes.
Maybe buy this?? Your toddler might love it. You’ve been warned.
She recommends it. I have mixed feelings. → Where would you like to sit? The only place left, I guess? - read it, you'll get it. (Amazon)
What Books Keep My 13-Month-Old Interested?
For us, it’s short pages, a good rhythm, and something she can participate in—whether that’s a peekaboo reveal or locating my nose for the twelfth time.
I’m counting anything that gets us past page one as a win. These are the books she reaches for, sits through, and immediately wants to read again.
And again.
If your toddler also has very strong opinions about storytime, these might earn you a few uninterrupted pages. Just finish your coffee first.
