Every October, I’m looking for Halloween books that are festive and cute, but more importantly, ones my one-year-old will actually sit through. These five have been the winners in our house. They’re silly, colorful, a little spooky, and genuinely fun to read over and over again.
1. Pig the Pug Halloween
My daughter is still a little too young to understand that Pug is being naughty, but that doesn’t stop me from giggling my way through the whole book. These books rhyme SO well, and the illustrations are super bright and engaging. She especially loves when Pug pukes up all the chocolate.
I don’t think she quite understands Pug yet, but she definitely understands the beautiful colors and fun rhymes—and that’s what keeps her hooked.

2. Goodnight Goon
My daughter loves waving and saying “night-night” to the goon. He’s just too cute not to love.
It’s silly and spooky without actually being scary, which makes it such a fun Halloween bedtime book.
3. I’m Going on a Goon Hunt
This one is SO fun to read out loud because the tempo changes as you go.
It starts off slow while they’re searching for the goon, and then as soon as they find him, you get to read fast, fast, fast as they race all the way back to the bedroom.
It makes the whole book feel like a little adventure, and it’s one of those books where the way you read it is half the fun.
4. I’ll Love You Till the Bats Say Boo
If you love I’ll Love You Till the Cows Come Home, this is such a cute Halloween twist on that same sweet idea.
It takes that familiar message of loving your little one no matter what and gives it a spooky makeover. I love that it’s still a sweet, snuggly bedtime book, just with a little Halloween magic mixed in.
Spoiler alert Bats can't say boo! (Amazon)
5. There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Ghost
This is exactly the kind of ridiculous book that works with little kids. It has that familiar repetition, except this time she’s swallowing her way through Halloween.
It’s silly, repetitive, and easy for little ones to follow along with—with that fun Halloween twist.
Do we count Ghost calories? (Amazon)
Our Halloween Bookshelf
If I were only picking five Halloween books for a little one this year, these would be them. There’s a little bit of everything—funny, spooky, interactive, and sweet.
And most importantly, they’ve passed the real test in our house: my one-year-old actually wants me to read them.
